Gameplay

What is the Training Center?

The Training Center is the core of Train Sim World 4 which can be expanded upon with various bundles or add-ons. The Training Center now has enhanced and improved training framework. Learn the basics of operating a range of traction in the Training Center, which now features the Class 323, 8F, as well as the Class 66. This means you can get to grips with diesel, steam, and electric power before taking to the rails of the real world. Play with trains that work for you, new difficulty ratings offer early insight into the complexity of content, and new settings eliminate trip-up areas, build your confidence, then master every machine in 10 reworked tutorials. Hear the team talk about these improvements here: Train Sim World 4 Training Center Additions

What is Free Roam mode?

Free roam mode gives you a blank canvas to get creative with. It’s just you and any route to explore without interruptions. Build your train by placing or removing locomotives, cars, and wagons at any time. No need to worry about signals, the path is dynamically set depending on where you want to go.

What Scenario Designer 2.0?

Iterating on the popular scenario designer you can now chain multiple paths into a single service. The path selection will be increased, giving you more options to play with. Tell a story with introductory text at the start of a scenario. Set the scene by choosing the exact weather you want players to see when driving your scenario. Get immersed by adding AI driven services that spawn from off-world portals to create a sense of an interconnected network. All of this is easy than ever thanks to a reworked user interface for a more intuitive experience.

What is Livery Designer 2.0?

Unleash your inner artist with up to 1000 layers to design with. Made a mistake? The improved user interface now allows you to undo/redo individual changes. Make it authentic by using our new selection of operator logos and fonts. Want to create your own operator or a literary masterpiece? Now it’s easier than ever with manual text entry.

What is the Creators Club Hub?

Creators Club is the hub that ties all our creative tools together and allows you to share/download player creations known as “mods”. Now it’s easier to find those hidden gems with the improved search functionality. Use the new filters to view mods that are compatible with the content you have installed. Whether you have created or downloaded a livery, you can now choose whether individual liveries will be visible on AI driven services.

What is Photo Mode?

Freeze the game and adjust the camera angle and settings until you get that perfect shot. Tweak color settings to get the right look. Adjust the depth of field to capture the sharp lines of your locomotive and soften the background.  When you are done, save it to your in-game photo gallery and share it via Dovetail Live. See photo mode in action here: Train Sim World 4 Photo Mode

What do the new windshield rain effects look like?

The new high fidelity windshield rain effects add a sense of realism to adverse driving conditions. So immersive yourself in the cab of your favourite locomotive and enjoy the challenge of driving in the rain. These effects will be available on all locos included with new routes. Hear more about the new effects here: Train Sim World 4 New Rain Effects

What is volumetric fog and what does it look like?

Volumetric fog adds an increased sense of depth and immersion to visuals by allowing you to see light beams and the headlights projected out in front of you. This is available on all routes that launced since Train Sim World 3. However, this feature will only be available on current generation consoles and PC. An increased sense of realism now makes driving in dense fog with bright headlights an atmospheric and challenging experience. See volumetric fog bring these routes to life here: Train Sim World 4 Volumetric Fog

How is the scoring system changing in Train Sim World 4?

The new scoring system encourages skilful driving, rewards players for using safety systems and penalises unprofessional driving. The whole system has been balanced to ensure that players feel adequately rewarded but encouraged to aim higher. To showcase the best of the best we have introduced a new Platinum tier medal that can only be achieved by using safety systems.

What is haptic feedback and how does it enhance gameplay?

Haptic feedback immerses you in the game by giving you tactile feedback through the controller in the form of vibrations that are representative of what is happening in the game.  We have implemented several different ways this technology can be used to enhance your experience with any loco on console or PC. Scalable settings for each of the following types of feedback let you tune the experience. Hear more from the team here: Train Sim World 4 Haptic Feedback

  • Throttle – As you move the throttle you will feel vibrations creating a sense of resistance.
  • Track Rumble – Feel the track joints as your train passes over.
  • Control Hover – A vibration pulse lets you know that you can interact with something when you hover the cursor over it.
  • Lever Moved Through Notches - Feel as the lever clicks into place as you move it through the notches.
  • Flicked Switch – Feel a definitive click as a switch locks into place.
  • Coupling Vibration – Feel the impact when you make contact with wagons.

On PlayStation 4 & 5 we have gone one step further by using the light bar and speaker on the controller. The upcoming signal colour will be visible on the lightbar and you will be able to hear safety system announcements coming from the controller speaker.

How does the new OHLE rendering improve the image quality?

New rendering technology enhances the clarity of OHLE (Over Head Line Equipment) by drastically reducing flickering and dissapearing OHLE at a distance. This is acheived by dynamically adjusting the thickness of the wire based on distance from the camera. All new routes will benifit from improved OHLE as well as Nahverkehr Dresden and Kassel – Wurzburg. Listen to the team talk about these improvements here: Train Sim World 4 OHLE Improvements.

What is the Advanced PC Editor?

This is our version of the Unreal Engine 4 toolset, the very same one our developers use. However, due to the complexity of this tool, it is best suited for advanced PC users only. An existing knowledge of Unreal Engine 4 development would be recommended. Functionality will be limited at first, but we hope to build upon it with player feedback. The PC Editor will be available at launch and distributed via the Epic Games Store but can be used with the Steam or EGS version of Train Sim World 4. Hear us talk about and show off the PC Editor for the first time in the videos below.

The Train Sim World 4 PC Editor (beta) can now be downloaded here from the Epic Games Store. You will be required to have an Epic Games

How do “Player Assists” help players of all skill levels enjoy the game?

Players assists not only help new players get to grips with trains faster, but they also provide quality of life improvements for players who want an easier experience. You can now automatically couple to anything without any manual interaction. Uncoupling is as simple as a one button prompt. Manual junctions will be automatically set, depending on your destination. However, if you want a more authentic experience, you can disable player assists in the settings menu.  If you are not sure which assists will be right for you, choose from 3 preset difficulty levels. Hear the team talk about the new assist here: Train Sim World 4 Player Assists

How are we improving accessiblity in Train Sim World 4?

There are many more re-bindable keyboard mappings for core functions. This means they can used with accessible controllers that replace keyboard input. Hear the team go into more detail here: Train Sim World 4 Accessibility

How will Cinematic Moments enhance new scenarios?

Cinematics Moments are designed to give players a sense of accomplishment and wonder in select new scenarios. Cinematic camera angles and a sweeping score highlight these moments, giving you time to appreciate these magnificent machines.

How will the HUD be changing in Train Sim World 4?

There will be three HUD types (Normal, Simple & Mini) to best suit your gameplay style and additional options to show/hide information. Furthermore, all HUDs now benefit from a new track monitor which shows you the next 2km of upcoming signals and speed limits. Hear us go in the details here: Train Sim World 4 HUD Improvements

Can you install Train Sim World 4 alongside previous Train Sim World games?

Yes, you can have multiple Train Sim World games installed side-by-side on the same machine without any conflicts. However, these games do not share files for add-ons. Therefore, you will need to download the specific add-on that is intended for your game.

Will my Train Sim World 3 progress be transferred to Train Sim World 4?

To make use of progress transfer you will need to have Train Sim World 2 or 3 installed on the same platform and account. Once the progress transfer has been completed you are no longer required to have previous games installed. Transferred data will include medals, profile stats, and general completion progress.

However, achievements will not automatically unlock after profile transfer. You will need to be actively earning progress towards the criteria of an achievement before it unlocks. For example, if you need to drive 100 miles in a loco and you have over 100 miles of progress transferred, you will need to be driving that loco before the achievement unlocks.

Note: Progress transfer does not transfer add-ons. In-Game Profiles and Dovetail Live accounts do not have any association with purchased add-ons. Anything purchased or redeemed for your game will be tied to your platform holder account (i.e. PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Steam or Epic Games Store account).

Will my Creators Club liveries & scenarios be transferred to Train Sim World 4?

No, Creators Club mods (liveries and scenarios) made with the in-game tools will not be transferred to Train Sim World 4. If you wish to use or edit your own mods in Train Sim World 4, you will need to upload them to Creators Club.

Once a mod has been uploaded, you may log into Train Sim World 4 and download an editable copy of that mod. A Dovetail Live account is required to use Creators Club. If you do not wish to upload your mods, they will safely remain in Train Sim World 3.

How much storage space will Train Sim World 4 use?

The below values are estimations and may vary depending on how many add-ons you have installed.

Steam

  • Standard Edition: 29.3 GB
  • Deluxe Edition: 36.3 GB
  • Special Edition: 57.9 GB

PlayStation 4

  • Standard Edition: 31.8 GB
  • Deluxe Edition: 37.5 GB
  • Special Edition: 59.6 GB

Xbox Series S|X

  • Standard Edition: 35.6 GB
  • Deluxe Edition: 43.7 GB
  • Special Edition: 68.1 GB

Compatible Content

What is compatible content?

Compatible content refers to add-ons which were created for older Train Sim World games but have a Train Sim World 4 specific version available for downloadable.

If you already own a digital add-on that is compatible with Train Sim World 4 on the same platform and account, then you will be able to automatically download it.

If you own a previous Train Sim World game on disc and have not claimed for the digital version of those add-ons before, then you will need to contact Dovetail Support to have those disc-based add-ons added to your account.

Will my add-on collection be downloadable in Train Sim World 4?

Yes, your collection comes with you, so long as your add-ons were purchased on the same platform and account on which you intend to play Train Sim World 4. All compatible add-ons are expected to be available to be downloadable at launch. Please have a look at our Train Sim World Add-On Guide for compatibility.

How do I download compatible add-ons for Train Sim World 4?

Once entitlements for compatible add-ons are live (refer to post-launch schedule) any compatible add-ons you own on the same platform and account will automatically be available to download for Train Sim World 4. This will be the same process as downloading any other add-on you own, so please refer to the instructions for your platform. Where something was purchased as a bundle, you will need to download the individual components of that bundle as the same bundle may not exist for Train Sim World 4.

Does my Dovetail Live account have a record of everything I have purchased?

No, Dovetail Live has no association with purchases you have made from your chosen platform. Your entitlement to games/add-ons is based on your platform account (i.e. PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Steam or Epic Games Store).

Can I transfer my games/add-ons to a different platform? (e.g. PlayStation 4 to PC)

Unfortunately, it is not possible to transfer games or add-ons across separate platforms. The following are considered separate platforms with their own storefronts.

When an add-on or game is bought from one of these platforms, you have purchased a licence to use that content exclusively on the platform it was sold for. Therefore, you are subject to the terms and conditions set out by the platform provider (e.g. PlayStation). The platform provider does not share these licences with any other platform.

  • PlayStation
  • Xbox/Microsoft Store/Game Pass for PC
  • Steam (PC)
  • Epic Games Store (PC)

The only exception is Microsoft who allows purchases to be used across Xbox and Microsoft Store for PC, where the product explicitly states that it is compatible with Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X and PC platforms.

Example:

What are Timetable layers and what compatible add-ons do I need to activate them?

Timetable Layers will allow you to drive locomotives from other routes/add-ons in timetable mode. They may require you to own the complete set of compatible add-ons before layers are activated. The exception being where an add-on states it has timetable support for this route in the product description. Timetable layers are applicable to 9th Gen Consoles & PC only. You will find more information about what add-ons you need to activate layers in the gameplay guides below.

After this time, there will be no further updates. Further details can be found in the roadmap article

Will Train Sim World 3 be compatible with new add-ons?

No, Train Sim World 3 will not be compatible with any add-ons released after the launch of Train Sim World 4.

Can I still purchase legacy games?

Train Sim World 2020, Train Sim World 2 and Train Sim World 3 will no longer be available for purchase digitally.

How do I purchase add-ons for Train Sim World 3 and other legacy games?

The best way to ensure that you are purchasing the correct add-on for your game is to use the in-game store. This will take you directly to the correct store page for your game. Store pages for legacy games and add-ons would normally be hidden when going directly through your platform’s storefront.

Please check the add-on guide to see what add-ons are compatible with your game.

How do I download a legacy game I already own?

Store pages for legacy games may no longer be available, but they will always be a part of your account. For most platforms (Steam, Epic, Xbox) all games will be available in your Library regardless of whether that game is still available for purchase or not. However, on PlayStation the download option may not be available. To work around this problem, you will need to initiate the download from a mobile or PC using our download guide.

Store pages for legacy games and add-ons may no longer be available. The store pages that are visible will be for the Train Sim World 4 version of add-ons which are not compatible with older titles. Therefore, you cannot use your platform’s storefront to download add-ons for a legacy game.

How do I download an add-on I bought for Train Sim World 4 but want to use with an older title?

Firstly, check the add-on guide to make sure that the add-on you have purchased is compatible with older Train Sim World titles.

If you have never downloaded this add-on for a legacy game before, you may have to “redeem” the correct version from the store before it is added to your library. To do this, enter the in-game store of your legacy Train Sim World title. Then select the add-on you wish to download and press View to be taken to the hidden store page. On the store page press Download which will “redeem” and download the add-on.

Once you have redeemed an add-on it will become a permanent part of your account and can be downloaded again using the normal instructions for your platform.
